On the 11th and 12th of August, 2020 in Abidjan, African seed experts have met upon invitation of the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development and AfricaSeeds to propose concrete solutions aimed at countering the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on the Ivorian seed sector and to facilitate farmers’ access to quality seed.
Seed is a determining factor for improving productivity and agricultural production in general, and for enhancing food security in particular. The Ivorian government has since the beginning invested relentlessly to secure and strengthen the seed capital of Côte d’Ivoire.
However, already weakened with a sub-regional rate of use of certified seeds that is the lowest in the world according to CORAF, the seed sector in Côte d’Ivoire has not been spared by the health crisis of Covid-19.
During the high-level meeting, the representative of the Minister of Agriculture and Sustainable Development Mr N’Gguessan Koffi Rodrigue reminded to the participants the limits of depending on the imports for agricultural inputs: “it is high time to build a dynamic seed sector, in order to ensure the sustainable increase of agricultural productivity, necessary to achieve food security and inclusive economic growth. And this will only be possible if we have an efficient seed sector ”.
During the two-day meeting, more than 15 seed sector experts reflected on the current and potential effects of the pandemic on the sector and developed short, medium and long term solutions.
The most important result of the workshop is the set of proposals to mitigate the immediate effects of the current health crisis have been developed in detail. Also, ad hoc activities for the effective implementation of the national agricultural investment plan have been validated and included in the national strategic context.
Providing decision-makers with concerted intervention proposals specific to each crop and department represents an important basis on which more relevant and efficient decision-making will possible. With positive repercussions on seed development, towards a transformation of Ivorian agriculture.
